Ghanaian gospel musician Sonnie Badu has defended the acceptance of sponsorship from condom manufacturing companies for gospel-related projects, stressing that such partnerships should not automatically be considered inappropriate.

In an interview on Angel FM in Kumasi, Sonnie Badu explained that condoms are widely used by married couples as a recognised method of family planning and should not always be associated with immoral behaviour.

He noted that receiving support from such companies does not conflict with Christian principles when the intention behind the project is positive and purposeful.

According to him, securing funding within the gospel music industry is often difficult, particularly when striving for high standards and excellence. This reality, he said, sometimes pushes gospel musicians to consider non-traditional sponsorship options to bring their projects to life.

“The level of excellence we want to achieve, I don’t think any gospel musician has ever had a company willing to invest over 100 million dollars,” he stated.

Sonnie Badu further explained that conventional funding sources, including banks, frequently decline to support gospel projects because of their perceived target market.

He assured that any sponsorship from condom manufacturers would be managed responsibly, including ensuring that promotional materials are carefully designed to avoid conveying the wrong message.

Drawing a comparison, he pointed out that some alcoholic beverage companies also produce non-alcoholic drinks, which could appropriately be used in sponsorship arrangements.

He also highlighted the financial limitations within the gospel space, noting that pastors often lack the resources to provide large-scale funding, making corporate sponsorships a crucial option for delivering quality gospel initiatives.

Sonnie Badu’s comments underscore the challenge of balancing gospel values with the practical need for financial support to produce impactful and well-executed gospel projects.
