According to the Ministry, the gesture seeks to harness the recipients’ influence in media, entertainment, arts, and philanthropy to promote African unity, cultural exchange, and continental integration.

Taking to Twitter shortly after the announcement, Wode Maya shared his excitement and disbelief.

“We’ve been on this incredible journey showcasing Ghana and the African continent to the world, and never in my wildest dreams did I think a proud village boy like me would be holding a Diplomatic Passport. I’m truly humbled and deeply grateful to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ghana,” he wrote.

Wode Maya is joined by Denta Amoateng, Rocky Dawuni, Anita Erskine, and artist Ibrahim Mahama, who were all named as ambassadors to promote the upcoming 2025 Diaspora Summit scheduled for December 17–20 in Ghana.

Traditionally reserved for government officials, diplomats, and state envoys, diplomatic passports grant holders certain privileges and exemptions when traveling abroad on official assignments.

This development comes just weeks after the new NDC government recalled all diplomatic passports issued under the previous administration, citing the need to review eligibility and prevent misuse of the travel document.

With this new honor, Wode Maya says he is more committed than ever to using his platform to showcase Africa’s beauty, potential, and unity to the rest of the world.
