‘I Earn Only GH¢15,000 As An MP, It Is Too Small’ – Kwame A Plus
Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as Kwame A-Plus and the Independent Member of Parliament for Gomoa Central, has expressed concerns about the adequacy of MPs’ salaries in Ghana.
In an interview on Adom FM, he revealed that MPs receive a monthly salary of GH₵15,000, which he considers insufficient given the demands of their role. A-Plus emphasized that the responsibilities of an MP are substantial, and the compensation does not align with the workload. He also mentioned plans to make his bank statements public to highlight the disparity between his previous earnings and his current salary as an MP.

Similarly, Kwame Governs Agbodza, the Minister-designate of Roads and Highways and MP for Adaklu, advised young individuals aspiring to enter politics to establish stable careers beforehand. During his vetting by Parliament’s Appointments Committee, Agbodza noted that the GH₵15,000 monthly salary for MPs is often expended on constituency responsibilities, such as attending community events and funerals. He highlighted that much of the resources he utilizes in his constituency come from his consultancy work and other ventures, underscoring the financial demands placed on MPs.
These statements shed light on the financial challenges faced by Ghanaian MPs, suggesting that the salary may not sufficiently cover both personal and constituency obligations.
