Speaking on UTV’s cooking show, Obaapa Christy explained that her decision comes from experience and the need to sustain her music ministry, which she considers her full-time profession.

“I will actually stand and take my money before I leave. Even if I know the person, I will still take it,” she said. “That’s because I’ve learnt my lessons. The most important thing is delivering exactly what I’m expected to do.”

She noted that many people assume gospel artists should perform for free, forgetting the costs involved in their work.

“This is my job and what God has blessed me with. If I don’t charge, how will I feed? When people come to me for help, it’s the same money I use to support them,” she added.

Addressing critics who say charging for gospel performances is unspiritual, Obaapa Christy said her fees reflect her experience and brand.

“There are levels in everything. I’ve worked hard to build my name, so my charges won’t be the same as someone who’s just starting,” she stated.

She also explained that her rates cover practical needs like transportation and logistics.

“When people book me, I buy fuel and handle other expenses before getting to the event. So it’s only fair that I get paid,” she said.

According to Obaapa Christy, being firm about payment is not about greed but about professionalism and valuing her craft.
