A few months ago, Sam George came under public scrutiny after forming a special committee tasked with finding ways to reduce the cost of data. Despite the criticism, he stood by the initiative, insisting that the committee’s work is essential for achieving meaningful and lasting price reductions.

In an interview on TV3’s New Day, he stated:
“I can’t set prices for data, but I will use policies to ensure affordable data.”

Addressing his critics, Sam George threw down a challenge: if he fulfills his promise by the end of the year, they should be willing to acknowledge his success.

Public opinion on the matter remains divided. Many Ghanaians believe the minister should be able to act more swiftly, without relying on committees. Others, however, appreciate the structured approach.

On the Street Is Watching podcast on YouTube, one commentator remarked:
“Setting up a committee is a smart move—if 80% of the cost of running a cell site is power, and we can reduce power costs for telcos, they’ll have no choice but to lower their data prices.”

He added,
“The internet is our lifeline now—we can’t live without data. I get why people are skeptical, especially given past committees that never delivered. But Sam George has said there will be clear action by the end of the year. If nothing happens, then we hold him accountable.”

In response to the podcast clip, Sam George reacted on X (formerly Twitter) with a lighthearted but firm message:
“I love this analysis. There is a chain reaction that leads to the cost build-up. We would unravel it and deliver. I would not allow you to drag me. Walahi! 😜 If I deliver too, you got given me my flowers. Deal? 🦁🇬🇭”
