At a press briefing in Hwidiem, the Regional Director of Health Services, Dr. Akosua Owusu-Sarpong, disclosed that 636 new HIV cases were recorded in the region between January and June 2025. Worryingly, about 14% of these infections were among teenagers and young people.

Dr. Owusu-Sarpong described the trend as “alarming, scary, and dangerous,” noting that instead of focusing on their education, many young people are engaging in risky sexual behaviors that expose them to the virus.
She appealed to journalists and media houses to support the directorate’s awareness and sensitization efforts aimed at curbing the spread of HIV and AIDS.
The Regional Health Director also cautioned persons living with HIV against deliberately infecting others, urging them instead to seek treatment and adhere to their medication to live healthy and productive lives
