On Sunday, August 10, Ghanaians paid their final respects to Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, Minister for Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation and MP for Tamale Central, as well as Alhaji Limuna Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator.

In accordance with Islamic rites, Janazah prayers were performed at the Forecourt of the State House in Accra, followed by their burial at the Military Cemetery near Burma Camp.

The solemn service drew the attendance of President John Dramani Mahama, Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin, the National Chief Imam Sheikh Osmanu Nuhu Sharubutu, bereaved families, government officials, Members of Parliament, members of the Muslim community, and the general public.

Their burial formed part of the three-day national mourning period declared by government, which began on Thursday, August 7, with a flower-laying ceremony. The observance also featured an “Evening of Reflection and Memorial” on Saturday, August 9, in honour of all victims of the helicopter crash.

A joint inter-denominational state funeral for all eight crash victims is scheduled for Friday, August 15, 2025, at the Black Star Square.

The tragic crash occurred on August 6 in the Adansi Akrofuom District, claiming the lives of:

  • Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Minister for Defence

  • Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, and MP for Tamale Central

  • Alhaji Limuna Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator

  • Dr. Samuel Sarpong, National Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC)

  • Samuel Aboagye, former parliamentary candidate

  • Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala

  • Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu

  • Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah

According to the Ghana Armed Forces, the Z-9 helicopter, which was carrying three crew members and five passengers, went “off the radar” shortly after departing Accra at 09:12 GMT. The aircraft was en route to Obuasi for an anti-illegal mining operation. A search-and-rescue mission later confirmed there were no survivors.
