Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh has announced that the government has made major strides in addressing the long-standing issue of unpaid salaries and allowances for health workers across Ghana.

Speaking at a press briefing in Accra on Monday, October 13, Mr. Akandoh revealed that the Ministry of Health has secured financial clearance for the payment of 17,909 nurses, midwives, and allied health interns who began their national service earlier in 2024.

He also disclosed that an additional 13,500 nurses and midwives who were recruited and posted in late 2024 have now received renewed clearance from the Ministry of Finance. Their previous clearance, which was set to expire on December 31, 2024, has been extended to ensure full payment of their salaries and allowances.

“Financial clearance has been secured for the payment of the 17,909 nurses, midwives, and allied health interns who started their national service in early 2024. Clearance has also been granted for 13,500 health workers recruited late last year, whose initial clearance was due to expire by December 31, 2024,” Mr. Akandoh confirmed.

The Minister reassured affected health personnel that the government remains dedicated to clearing all outstanding arrears and is implementing systems to prevent such delays in the future.

“The Ministry is taking steps as part of a broader effort to strengthen Ghana’s health system and safeguard the welfare of our workforce,” he added.

Mr. Akandoh encouraged all health workers to remain patient and committed to their duties, assuring them that any pending concerns would be addressed through the appropriate channels.
