Minister of Education Haruna Iddrisu said the decline in results should not be blamed on the government, following public concerns and criticism over the outcome.

Speaking at the inauguration of the governing councils of four Colleges of Education, the minister described the results as a wake-up call and called for a broad review of the secondary education system to enhance quality.

“In Ghana, when students do well, we applaud them. When they perform poorly, the blame goes to the minister. I reject the suggestion that the government of President Mahama, the Ministry of Education, or the examining body is responsible for this poor performance,” he stated.

He noted that the results should push stakeholders to closely examine the condition of secondary education, especially in areas of quality assurance and infrastructure development.

According to him, many schools have used the same facilities for years without expansion, adding that some institutions have not had new dormitories or buildings added to their infrastructure for a long time.

Mr. Iddrisu also disclosed that the government has secured $200 million from the World Bank to phase out the double-track system.

He explained that the plan includes upgrading 30 Category C schools to Category B, 10 Category B schools to Category A, and expanding infrastructure in all Category A schools, stressing the government’s commitment to improving education standards and learning environments.
