Government Suspends Contract Appointments For Retired Public Servants
The Office of the President of Ghana has issued a directive suspending the granting of contract appointments to retired public service staff with immediate effect.
In a letter dated April 2, 2025, signed by Dr. Callistus Mahama, Secretary to the President, it was announced that all post-retirement contract appointments are to be put on hold. The statement read: “The grant of post-retirement contract appointments to retired public service staff has been suspended with immediate effect.”
This directive follows earlier actions by the government to ensure adherence to good governance practices in public service appointments. In February 2025, the Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, revoked all public service appointments and recruitments made after December 7, 2024, citing non-compliance with established governance principles. The suspension of post-retirement contract appointments reflects the government’s ongoing efforts to regulate public service appointments and maintain transparency in the administration of public sector employment.
