The Government of Ghana has stepped in to support victims of the devastating fire that ravaged the Kantamanto Market in Accra on January 2, 2025, with a donation of GH₵1 million. The fire, which destroyed over 7,000 shops and disrupted the livelihoods of more than 30,000 traders, has left many in dire need of assistance.

This donation fulfills a pledge made by President John Dramani Mahama when leaders of the Kantamanto Traders Association, representing 13 different groups, paid a courtesy call on him shortly after he officially assumed office. The presentation was made by the Chief of Staff and senior government officials, demonstrating the administration’s commitment to providing immediate relief to those affected.

During the presentation, the Chief of Staff emphasized the government’s intention to not only support traders in the short term but also rebuild Kantamanto into a multi-purpose modern market. The planned redevelopment aims to provide improved infrastructure, enhance security, and ensure better accessibility for emergency services, thereby reducing the risk of future disasters.

The government also acknowledged the need for collaboration and dialogue with stakeholders to address critical issues, including the redesign of the market enclave to support efficient business operations and rapid response during emergencies. Officials expressed readiness to work with traders and financial institutions to fast-track the reconstruction process.

Rev. Opoku Afreh, Chairman of the Kantamanto Traders Association, conveyed the group’s appreciation for the government’s swift intervention. He disclosed ongoing discussions with Access Bank to secure a $100 million loan aimed at building a state-of-the-art market facility. However, he also urged the government to assist in resolving a lingering dispute over the affected land to ensure the smooth progress of redevelopment efforts.

The Kantamanto Market, a key hub for commerce in Accra, is home to thousands of traders dealing in used clothing, footwear, and other goods. Its destruction has not only impacted traders but also disrupted economic activity in the area.

Traders and market leaders have lauded the government’s support but called for sustained efforts to ensure long-term solutions. Improved fire safety measures, better market infrastructure, and government-led interventions to settle disputes over the land are among the top priorities for the affected groups.

As the government works to support recovery, the incident serves as a reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by informal markets across Ghana and the urgent need for improved market infrastructure nationwide
