Government Calls On Domestic Airlines To Reduce Fares Amid Strengthening Cedi
The government has urged commercial airlines operating within Ghana’s airspace to adjust their fares downward in response to the recent appreciation of the Ghanaian cedi against major foreign currencies, particularly the US dollar.
This call is part of a broader push to ensure that the benefits of a stronger cedi are passed on to consumers, especially in the aviation sector where exchange rates significantly influence operational costs and ticket pricing.
According to officials, the strengthening of the local currency should naturally lead to a reduction in costs associated with aviation fuel, aircraft maintenance, and other dollar-denominated expenses—ultimately easing the financial burden on travelers.
The government’s appeal comes at a time when domestic air travel in Ghana is experiencing a surge in patronage, reaching its highest levels in recent years. Authorities believe that fare adjustments will not only make air travel more accessible to a larger segment of the population but also stimulate greater economic activity across the country by facilitating faster and more affordable movement of people and goods.

In line with this, the Ministry of Transport and other relevant stakeholders are expected to engage with airline operators to ensure pricing reflects current economic realities. The government has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting a robust, competitive, and consumer-friendly aviation industry.
