Gospel Is Ministry, Not Showbiz — Amy Newman Speaks Out
Veteran gospel singer Amy Newman is happy to see how far Ghana’s gospel music has come, but she’s worried that some artistes have turned what she considers “a divine calling” into ordinary show business.
To her, gospel music should go beyond catchy tunes and online hype — it should remain a sacred ministry focused on transforming lives.
Speaking to Graphic Showbiz on Saturday, November 1, the Okamafo hitmaker said gospel music is gradually being viewed as entertainment rather than ministry.

“These days, people call it an ‘industry,’ which means business. But to me, it’s a ‘ministry.’ That’s where God has placed me,” she said.
“Some artistes now hype themselves and chase attention instead of focusing on the message and the calling.”
Amy appreciates the fresh energy and professionalism younger artistes bring, but she believes the spiritual foundation must remain strong.

“What makes me happy is that many of the young ones are now learning music properly. They’re growing in both ministry and skill. In our time, we depended mostly on anointing and grace. Now they’re combining training with ministry, and that’s beautiful.”
Still, she is concerned that the increasing similarities between gospel and secular music are blurring the lines between purpose and entertainment.

“We all have different callings. The Bible says God gave five talents to one, two to another, and one to another. Our work is God’s business. If we understood that, we wouldn’t rush to copy others,” she noted.

“Many artistes are following the crowd, focusing on pleasing people instead of God. That’s why the music is becoming more about entertainment rather than blessing the nation and the world.”
On the ongoing debate about gospel artistes collaborating with secular musicians, Amy remained neutral.
“It depends on one’s conviction. I won’t condemn anyone,” she said, adding that she personally has never considered such a collaboration.

Amy, who is still actively ministering, recently released a new album, Adom Bi Agye Me, on October 19. She also revealed plans to release another song during the Christmas season.
“By God’s grace, I’ll put out another song in December for Christmas,” she said with excitement.
