Ghana’s Embassy In Washington, D.C. Reopens Today
Ghana’s Embassy in Washington, D.C., is set to reopen today, May 29, 2025, after a temporary closure prompted by a visa fraud scandal. The closure was triggered by the discovery that a locally hired IT staffer had embedded an unauthorized link on the embassy’s website, redirecting visa and passport applicants to a private firm that charged illicit fees. The reopening follows a series of sweeping reforms aimed at restoring integrity and transparency.

In response to the scandal, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration took swift action by recalling and suspending the implicated embassy staff. A new team of experienced diplomats, led by a senior ministry official, has been appointed to oversee operations, drive systemic reforms, and restore public trust. Their mandate includes a full operational overhaul and the continuation of structural improvements.
Additionally, a dedicated Information Technology (IT) unit has been deployed to revamp the embassy’s website and payment systems, ensuring the removal of all unauthorized and unofficial platforms.
The case has been referred to the Auditor-General and the Attorney-General for further investigation, with appropriate sanctions expected for those found culpable.
