The elimination of tariffs is expected to significantly boost trade volumes between Ghana and China, stimulate job creation, and empower a new generation of Ghanaian entrepreneurs by enhancing access to the vast Chinese market. China, which remains Ghana’s largest trading partner, recorded bilateral trade surpassing US$11 billion in 2024.

In addition to the tariff-free access, ongoing discussions have laid the groundwork for strategic industrial partnerships aligned with President John Dramani Mahama’s national transformation agenda. A major highlight is the planned industrial development of Ghana’s vast bauxite reserves—estimated at over 900 million tonnes—through the establishment of an integrated aluminium industry. This includes investments in modern rail infrastructure to streamline logistics and support a shift from raw material exports to value-added manufacturing.

Furthermore, Ghana and China have agreed to collaborate on the establishment of an electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing plant in Ghana. This initiative capitalizes on Ghana’s rich lithium deposits, a critical component in the global green energy transition. The project aims to position Ghana as a regional leader in sustainable, high-tech industrial production.

To cement these collaborations, Ghana and China are set to sign a comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement that will formalize cooperation across multiple sectors, driving sustained economic growth and industrialization.

Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa emphasized the government’s dedication to using diplomacy as a tool for national development. “President Mahama’s administration is firmly committed to leveraging diplomacy for the transformation of our dear country,” he stated, underscoring the strategic importance of these agreements in advancing Ghana’s economic modernization agenda.
