Ghana FA Restructures Black Stars Coaching Staff Following AFCON Qualification Failure
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has parted ways with assistant coach Joseph Laumann as part of a restructuring of the Black Stars’ technical team. This decision comes after Ghana’s failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), marking the nation’s first absence from the tournament since 2004.
Laumann, a German coach of Moroccan descent, was appointed in March 2024 to support head coach Otto Addo. However, after a disappointing qualification campaign that saw Ghana finish at the bottom of their group, the GFA opted for changes within the coaching setup.

To fill the vacancy, Desmond Ofei, head coach of Ghana’s U20 team, has been promoted to the senior squad. Additionally, veteran German coach Winfried Schäfer has been brought in as a technical advisor. Despite these changes, former Ghana internationals John Paintsil and Fatawu Dauda will retain their positions as assistant coach and goalkeepers’ trainer, respectively.
The restructuring reflects the GFA’s commitment to revitalizing the Black Stars as they prepare for future international competitions.
