Ghana And Czech Republic Seal Major Agreements During Landmark State Visit
Ghana and the Czech Republic have made significant strides in enhancing their bilateral relations during a historic state visit by Czech President Petr Pavel to Accra, marking the first visit by a Czech head of state in over sixty years.
At a ceremony held at Ghana’s presidential palace, President John Mahama and President Petr Pavel witnessed the signing of key agreements: a Bilateral Air Services Agreement aimed at enhancing direct flights between the two countries, and a Memorandum of Understanding to establish regular political consultations.
These agreements come as trade between the nations reached $33 million last year, with both leaders optimistic about the potential for further growth in the coming years.
“This visit opens a new chapter in our 63-year relationship,” President Pavel said in a statement to reporters, unveiling plans to set up a Czech Technology Hub in Ghana. He highlighted promising areas for cooperation, including agriculture, mining technology, and water purification systems.
President Mahama seized the opportunity to encourage Czech investment in key infrastructure projects, particularly Ghana’s long-awaited 50 and 100 Bridges initiatives. Additionally, he requested Prague’s support for Ghana’s regional security efforts and its candidacy for the United Nations Tourism Organization.

The Czech Republic, a prominent arms exporter, is increasingly seen as a crucial security partner for several African countries. Industry analysts suggest that the visit could lead to expanded defense cooperation agreements between the two nations.
The two leaders agreed to convene a joint business forum later this year, with a follow-up ministerial meeting planned for September in Prague.
