Ghanaian actress and film producer Yvonne Nelson has opened up about the challenges she has encountered in the movie industry, revealing that the Film Producers Association of Ghana (FIPAG) attempted to derail her career.

According to Yvonne, her outspoken nature and willingness to call out issues within the industry led to her being banned by FIPAG.

“I was banned by a group of men in the industry. They call themselves FIPAG. Something happened on set, and they came together. When you’re a woman who speaks up—when you’re unhappy with things and choose to address them—people just don’t like that,” she stated.

She continued, “They felt I was new to the industry and questioned why I was speaking up so much or complaining too often. That was the challenge I faced because they believed I was vocal about everything that didn’t sit right with me.”

She further stated, “I believe, in their minds, they wanted to intimidate me, crush my dreams, teach me a lesson, and ultimately silence me as a young woman in the industry.”

Despite the ban, Yvonne found a silver lining and used the setback as motivation to establish her own production company, YN Productions, with the support of individuals like Kelvin Kobiri, who has since transitioned into ministry.

“I just decided that I could do my own thing—I could produce my own movies. So, I registered a company around that time and started producing my films,” she explained.

Yvonne shared these revelations during an interview with Irene Adubea Aning on The Career Trail show on Joy News and Joy Learning TV.

She continued, “I met a gentleman named Kelvin Kobiri, who is now in ministry. He believed in me, just like Abdul Salam did. He funded my first two to three movies.”

However, Yvonne also revealed that her journey was not without challenges, as she faced significant sabotage. She recalled a major setback when her first production was stolen.

“The first production was stolen after editing. Armed robbers broke into the editor’s studio and took all his drives. We lost everything we had shot. I believe it was sabotage,” she recounted.

She continued, “They knew Yvonne—we banned her. So, what is she doing again? She’s producing? Okay, we shall see. I felt there was a lot of hate in the industry. To this day, I don’t know who was behind it, but it’s obvious.”

Despite the setback, Yvonne and her team persevered, reshooting the entire production at a significant cost.

Through resilience and determination, she has successfully produced 14 movies, including Kotoka and Heels and Sneakers. She also hinted at her upcoming film, Summer, which is set for release soon.

Reflecting on her journey, Yvonne admitted that her time in the film industry had been anything but easy.
