Emmanuel Adebayor Explains Why He Chose Togo Over Ghana

In a recent interview, Adebayor revealed that his brief time in the Ghanaian camp was marked by communication barriers. The primary languages spoken by players and officials were Twi and Ga, both of which he did not understand. This left him feeling isolated and disconnected from his teammates. Unable to blend into the environment, he made the bold decision to leave the camp early in the morning and return to Togo.
Born in Togo to parents of Nigerian descent, Adebayor made his debut for the Togolese national team in 2000. Over the years, he became an iconic figure in Togolese football, leading the team to their historic first-ever FIFA World Cup appearance in 2006. His contributions to football were recognized when he was named African Footballer of the Year in 2008.
Despite the missed opportunity with Ghana, Adebayor has expressed no regrets about his decision. His legacy with the Togolese national team remains unmatched, as he is their all-time top scorer and one of the most celebrated footballers in the country’s history.
