Elon Musk has launched a scathing attack on President Donald Trump’s flagship tax and spending bill, branding it a “disgusting abomination” and signaling a growing rift between the two once-close allies.

The bill, which features multi-trillion-dollar tax cuts, increased defense spending, and expanded government borrowing, passed the House of Representatives last month. If approved by Congress, it is set to become the centerpiece of Trump’s economic agenda should he secure a second term.

Taking to X earlier this week, Musk warned the bill would significantly deepen the U.S. budget deficit and burden Americans with “crushing” debt. On Tuesday, he escalated his criticism, tweeting: “Shame on those who voted for it,” and hinted at funding efforts to unseat the bill’s backers in the upcoming midterm elections.

Musk’s criticism follows his abrupt departure from the Trump administration on May 31, after just 129 days serving on a cost-cutting advisory team known as Doge. His latest remarks mark the first public break with Trump since leaving government, having previously described the legislation as merely “disappointing.”

The proposed legislation, dubbed the “One Big Beautiful Bill” by Trump, is projected to increase the federal deficit by approximately $600 billion in the next fiscal year. Musk contends the real figure is far higher. In a string of posts, he called the bill “outrageous” and “pork-filled,” estimating it could balloon the deficit to $2.5 trillion and impose a “crushingly unsustainable” debt load on American citizens.

In U.S. political jargon, “pork” refers to government spending allocated for localized projects to win favor with constituents.

The White House responded to criticism on Wednesday with a fact sheet labeled a “myth buster,” denying claims the bill would worsen the deficit. “By every honest metric, President Donald J. Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill dramatically improves the fiscal trajectory of the United States and unleashes an era of unprecedented economic growth,” the statement read. It did not directly address Musk or his comments.

Despite their political divergence, Trump expressed warm words for Musk after his exit, stating, “He will, always, be with us, helping all the way.”

Musk, who has previously pledged to support Trump-aligned candidates, appears to be shifting course. On Tuesday, he issued a stark warning: “In November next year, we fire all politicians who betrayed the American people.”
