Education Minister Directs All Schools to Use Local Languages for Teaching
Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has instructed the Ghana Education Service (GES) to ensure the mandatory use of mother tongue instruction in all schools across the country.

He explained that the directive is part of ongoing education reforms aimed at improving learning outcomes through the promotion of local languages in teaching.
Speaking at the launch of the Free Tertiary Education Programme for Persons Living with Disabilities, Mr. Iddrisu emphasized that teaching in local languages especially at the basic school level helps enhance understanding and effective learning among pupils.

“I am directing the Director-General of the GES that, from today, the use of mother tongue as a medium of instruction is compulsory in all Ghanaian schools,” the Minister stated.
He further charged the GES to ensure strict compliance, adding that the initiative aligns with President Mahama’s “reset agenda” to strengthen the country’s education system.
