Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson emphasized that removing the E-Levy will provide significant financial relief to Ghanaians. He highlighted that the repeal would return approximately GH¢2 billion to the populace, alleviating financial pressures and enhancing livelihoods.
President John Dramani Mahama is expected to sign the repeal bill into law soon. Dr. Forson expressed confidence in the President’s prompt action to finalize the legislative process.
The E-Levy, introduced in 2022, imposed a tax on electronic transactions, including mobile money payments and bank transfers. Its implementation faced significant opposition from the public and various stakeholders who argued that it added financial burdens and discouraged digital transactions.
The repeal aligns with the government’s commitment to promoting financial inclusion and encouraging the use of digital payment platforms without additional costs to users. Deputy Finance Minister Thomas Nyarko Ampem assured that the implementation of the repeal would take effect before next week Friday.
Economists and financial analysts have lauded the decision, noting that it will boost digital transactions and stimulate economic growth.
In summary, the abolition of the E-Levy is a significant step towards easing financial burdens on Ghanaians and fostering a more inclusive digital economy.
