DOVVSU Boss Calls For End To Gender Violence, Urges Witness Support
The Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) in charge of the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU), Mrs. Owusuwaa Kyeremeh, has made a passionate call for an end to gender-based violence, urging Ghanaians to report abuse whenever they witness it.

Speaking during a tour of DOVVSU’s newly commissioned facility at the Police Headquarters in Accra, ACP Kyeremeh stressed the need for collective action in addressing the issue.
“Gender-based violence doesn’t just affect individuals it affects families, communities, and national development,” she said. “To those perpetuating such acts, we urge you to stop.”

She also emphasized the role of bystanders, noting that silence can make them complicit.
“If you witness abuse and say nothing, you’re indirectly encouraging it. Survivors often have no voice when you speak up, you become that voice.”

According to her, failing to report such incidents only fuels the cycle of abuse.
ACP Kyeremeh announced that the entire month of July has been dedicated to raising awareness on domestic violence, with public engagement activities planned nationwide.

Highlighting one major event, she revealed plans for a symbolic vigil walk to show solidarity with survivors.
“The walk, likely around 9 or 10 p.m., will involve lanterns or candles to symbolize hope in the darkness victims often face.”
Other activities will include poetry, storytelling, and fireside sessions to further engage the public and empower survivors.

The newly commissioned DOVVSU facility operational since last year features sleeping quarters, a kitchen, modern restrooms, and a peaceful garden for survivors’ comfort and recovery.

“It’s a beautiful space that must be fully utilized. We encourage victims to seek help and make use of our services,” ACP Kyeremeh added, reaffirming DOVVSU’s commitment to justice and survivor support.
