Doctors Say You’re 20 Years Younger – Mahama To Opoku-Agyemang
Vice President Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has officially resumed her duties after an extended medical leave, receiving a warm welcome from President John Dramani Mahama, who offered words of encouragement as she eases back into office.
Speaking during a brief address on Thursday, May 22, in Accra, President Mahama remarked:
“The doctors say you are 20 years younger. That is what the professor told me—that you are okay and fit for the job. We will ask that you take it easy for a little while, and after that, we will see how things go.”
Her return follows weeks of public speculation and concern about her health. Initially expected to be away for just three weeks, her leave was extended beyond that timeframe, prompting discussions about the lack of detailed updates from government officials.

Sources close to the Office of the Vice President confirmed that Prof. Opoku-Agyemang first underwent medical consultation at the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) before travelling abroad for further treatment. While details of her medical care remain private, President Mahama’s remarks suggest she has made a full recovery and is cleared to resume her responsibilities.
The Vice President’s prolonged absence sparked political commentary and raised questions about transparency, especially given her critical role in the administration. However, her return—and the President’s public assurance of her wellbeing—appear to reaffirm the government’s position that the situation was handled appropriately.
“I particularly missed you. The doctors say you are 20 years younger” — President Mahama warmly welcomed Vice President, Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang as she returned to Ghana from medical treatment in the UK.
