Doctors At KATH Suspend All Surgical Cases Following Water Crisis
Doctors at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi have suspended all surgical procedures due to a severe water shortage that began last week. In a memo dated March 25, 2025, the Komfo Anokye Doctors Association (KADA) informed hospital management that this decision was made to ensure patient safety and maintain healthcare standards.
The Orthopaedic and Emergency Directorate has also temporarily halted the admission of new patients until water supply is restored. KADA emphasized that water is essential for maintaining hygiene, conducting surgeries, and ensuring overall patient care. Despite efforts to manage the situation, the current shortage has reached a critical point, compromising both patient safety and healthcare delivery.
Dr. Michael Leat, Chairman of KADA, apologized for the inconvenience caused and assured that existing patients would continue to receive care. He urged hospital management to explore alternative water supply options and provide regular updates on the situation.
Hospital management attributes the crisis to an unresolved service disruption by the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL). While alternative sources, including assistance from the Ghana National Fire Service and the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, have been utilized, these measures have proven inadequate. Management is in constant communication with GWCL to expedite repairs and restore normal operations.
This suspension underscores the critical need for a reliable water supply in healthcare facilities to ensure uninterrupted medical services.
