The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has endorsed Ghana’s recent GH¢1 fuel levy, describing it as a strategic move aligned with the country’s financial goals under the Extended Credit Facility (ECF) program. Julie Kozack, IMF Communications Director, explained that the measure will bolster Ghana’s efforts to meet the fiscal targets set in the programme.

Meanwhile, a separate debate is brewing in Ghana’s political arena over the possibility of President John Dramani Mahama running for a third term. Speaking on Oyerepa FM on Wednesday, June 11, 2025, former NPP National Chairman Freddie Blay addressed the controversy.
“The law is in the bosom of the judges,” Blay remarked, referring to the potential constitutional interpretation that could allow Mahama another run for office. “If it goes to the Supreme Court—which has the exclusive judicial right to interpret the Constitution—and that body decides that what it means by two terms is conservatively this or that, I don’t have a problem with it.”
Blay stressed, however, that the judiciary alone cannot decide a president. “The law court does not vote for a president. The individuals who constitute a panel and may look at a case have only one vote each. It is the people of this country who will vote,” he emphasized.
The comments come amid allegations by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) that the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) and former President Mahama are seeking to remove Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Torkornoo. The NPP claims this would pave the way for a reinterpretation of Article 66(2) of the Constitution to argue that the two-term limit applies only to consecutive terms—thus enabling Mahama to contest again.
