Gospel artiste Mavis Asante has reignited debate in Ghana’s music industry by strongly opposing collaborations between gospel and secular musicians, calling such efforts mere “noise” that water down the essence of gospel music.

In an exclusive interview with Graphic Showbiz on Monday, April 28, the Victory hitmaker argued that gospel musicians have a sacred assignment that should remain untainted by secular influence.

“First and foremost, what is the purpose behind such collaborations? Is it for fame, hype, or truly to win souls?” she questioned.

Using an analogy, Mavis emphasized the importance of distinct callings: “Just as a lawyer cannot perform surgery, a secular artiste cannot represent the gospel message. We are two different people with two different missions.”

Despite the popularity of gospel-secular pairings—like Herty Borngreat and Sarkodie’s Bebree, Joyce Blessing and AB Crentsil’s The Lord’s Prayer, and Nacee and Guru’s Boys Boys—Mavis insists such partnerships veer off the spiritual path.

“The mission of secular artistes doesn’t align with that of gospel musicians. Gospel is about God, salvation, and spiritual growth,” she stressed. “These collaborations create confusion and, in my view, do nothing to enhance the gospel message. I call it ‘noise’ in Mass Communication.”

She urged gospel artistes to seek collaborations within the gospel community and to make such decisions prayerfully.

“There are plenty of gospel artistes to collaborate with. Sometimes, saying no to a big secular name honours God more than the publicity the song might bring,” she advised.

Recently returning to the scene with her single Victory, Mavis Asante concluded with a call for gospel musicians to remain steadfast in their spiritual mission, reminding them that lasting impact should never come at the cost of spiritual integrity.
