Club World Cup: Real Madrid Confirm Whether Mbappé Will Face Salzburg

Kylian Mbappé has been omitted from Real Madrid’s squad for their final Club World Cup group stage match against Red Bull Salzburg.

The French star has yet to feature in the United States this summer after being hospitalized with a bout of gastroenteritis. Although he returned to individual training earlier this week, he has not progressed enough to make the matchday squad.

Manager Xabi Alonso had expressed optimism about Mbappé’s recovery and potential availability for the Salzburg clash. However, medical staff advised caution due to the player’s incomplete recovery and the extreme summer temperatures, which could further complicate his condition. The club is prioritizing the 26-year-old’s long-term wellbeing and is unwilling to take unnecessary risks.

“I was happy to see him on the pitch, but it was the first day he’d put on his boots and run a bit,” Alonso explained after announcing the squad. “He’s doing well, but he hasn’t fully recovered.

“He still has some weakness and isn’t yet ready to compete at the level we’ll need tomorrow. We spoke after training, and he felt it was best to stay behind and focus on a full recovery, aiming to be ready if we progress to the round of 16.”

Real Madrid’s qualification is not yet guaranteed following their opening draw with Al Hilal, but they remain in control of their fate. A draw against Salzburg would be enough to secure progression, while a win would ensure they top the group. Even in defeat, Madrid could still advance provided Al Hilal lose to Pachuca in the other fixture.
