“Can A Muslim Become President Of Ghana?” — Apostle Emmanuel Temda Questions
Renowned preacher and worship leader, Apostle Emmanuel Temda, popularly known as The Torchbearer. Apostle Emmanuel Temda is the founder of Glorious Impact Worship Centre (GIWC) and Emmanuel Temda Ministries (ETM), ministries widely known for passionate worship, prophetic teaching, and transformational encounters. Through his leadership, many lives have been impacted both spiritually and socially.
Apostle Emmanuel Temda writes:
Despite being a predominantly Christian Nation, Ghana’s political landscape has shown that religion is not a barrier to seeking the highest office.
The country’s democracy allows for persons from different backgrounds and religious practices to assume high profile offices such as the presidency once they are qualified and given the nod by electorates.
I am therefore bemused by certain claims made by cross-section of Ghanaians that no Muslim can ever be President of Ghana. The fact that no Muslim has in the annals of Ghana ever been President does not suggest that a Muslim cannot be voted into office as a President in a country that is largely Christian.
Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s recent victory in the NPP primaries reflects the confidence party members have in his leadership, vision and commitment to Ghana’s development. If against all odds, he was able to win in a landslide victory, what shows he cannot be elected as the number one gentleman of this beautiful land?
I would rather have a good, competent, technocrat politician who can come up with good policies for the development of our country than to be fixated with religious labels. Undoubtedly, the criteria should be on a candidate’s competence, vision, track record and capability to unite the country rather than the faith factor.
God shows no partiality, favoritism, or bias based on race, nationality, or social status because He is no respecter of persons. Let God be true but every man a liar. He is always justified in His judgments. Human opinions, fallibility or faithlessness cannot invalidate divine truth.
Scripture indicates that all leadership authority is ordained, appointed and instituted by God to carry out His purpose. Daniel declares that “the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will” (Daniel 4:17).
Elsewhere in Proverbs 8:15-16, it is made emphatically clear that: “by me kings reign, and princes decree justice. By me princes rule, and nobles, even all the judges of the earth”.
Jesus told Pilate in John 19:11 “Thou couldest have no power at all against me, except it were given thee from above”.
Scripture in Romans 13:1-7 emphasizes that resisting established authority is resisting God’s ordinance, as leaders are “ministers of God”.
Although Pharaoh was an evil ruler, God had this to say about him: “For this very purpose, I raised you up to demonstrate my power in you, and that my name might be proclaimed throughout the whole earth” (Romans 9:17 NASB)
If God called Cyprus “his anointed” when he was not a Jew but a pagan Persian King and used him to liberate the Jewish people from Babylonian captivity, (Isaiah 45:1) then God can use any vessel to accomplish His will and purpose.
Should God decide to use a Muslim to lead the Nation of Ghana, do we have a say? The decision of the Almighty is always the final one. Does not the bible say that “with God all things are possible” (Matthew 19:26).
Some of our fathers in the faith have shot themselves in the foot with recent outburst on the impossibility of a Muslim ever becoming the President of Ghana. They must avoid making statements that undermine and compromise their spiritual credibility.
As patriarch’s leading the flock of God, they must offer divine guidance based on the mind and will of God and not on their personal preferences and betrayed emotions. Truth be told, their emotions or otherwise cannot supersede or overturn the will and counsel of God. This must put themselves in check to revise their notes, control their articulations and eat humble pie.
Afterall, If God says, a Muslim will be president of this nation one day, it can really happen because He, being the creator of heaven and earth, knows the end from the beginning.
Yes, it is true that Ghana is a Christian country. So, will Christian churches close down just because a Muslim becomes a Head of State?
Will you not work under a Muslim CEO who pays you a very good salary just because he is a Muslim?
We must all be subject to God-ordained authorities. The individuals who are in positions of authority themselves are accountable to God for their actions. (1 Peter 5:5)
