BECE Candidate In Ashanti Region Reportedly Abandons Exams For illegal Mining
A 2025 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) candidate from Duapompo in the Ashanti Region has abandoned the exams to work at an illegal mining site, commonly known as a galamsey pit.
Reports indicate that the male student opted for the lure of quick money through galamsey over pursuing his education.
Information gathered indicates that the candidate had duly registered for the 2025 Basic Education Certificate Examination but failed to appear on Wednesday, June 11—the first day of the exams.
TV3 journalist Evans Nkum, who visited Duapompo M/A JHS, reported the incident, saying: “We encountered a rather disturbing situation at Duapompo M/A JHS. According to one of the teachers, a registered candidate failed to write the exam because he had left to engage in illegal mining. When questioned, he simply said he was going to look for money. So, instead of sitting for the BECE, he chose to work in a galamsey pit.”
