The Accra Regional Police Command has confirmed that a police officer seen in a viral video assaulting a journalist during the Ablekuma North parliamentary re-run election has been interdicted and will face criminal prosecution.

The incident took place on Friday, July 11, amid a tense and violence-marred re-run, which witnessed disruptions at several polling stations.

In a press statement released on Thursday, July 17, the police said they are analyzing multiple video footages to identify all individuals involved in the disturbances.

“The Command has obtained statements from complainants and witnesses to support ongoing investigations,” said Superintendent Juliana Obeng, Head of Public Affairs for the Accra Region. She further noted that “vital leads have been gathered,” with arrests expected soon.

The assaulted journalist and other victims have been issued Police Medical Report Forms to facilitate both medical care and legal processes. The officer in question whose identity has not yet been disclosed was immediately interdicted and is currently being held for assault.

The police emphasized their commitment to accountability and justice, stating, “The Accra Regional Police Command reiterates its determination to ensure that all individuals responsible for violence, intimidation, or electoral misconduct are brought to justice in accordance with the law.”

Authorities are calling on the public to assist in the investigations by providing credible information via emergency numbers 18555 or 191.

The re-run in Ablekuma North was held after the original parliamentary results were nullified due to electoral irregularities. The police have assured the public that justice will be served impartially, reaffirming their dedication to upholding the rule of law before, during, and after elections.
