Anas Vs. Kennedy Agyapong: U.S. Court Reduces $18M Defamation Penalty To $500
A United States court has significantly reduced the $18 million defamation award previously granted to Ghanaian politician and former Member of Parliament, Kennedy Agyapong, slashing it to just $500.
The Superior Court of New Jersey had initially awarded investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas $18 million in a defamation suit against the former MP and social media commentator Frederick Asamoah.
The case stemmed from allegedly defamatory comments made by the two during a 2021 interview that was shared on social media, sparking a protracted legal battle.
According to a press release issued on Monday, May 12, by Anas’ investigative outfit, Tigereyepi, the trial judge approved a remittitur motion—essentially a legal request to reduce excessive damages—while upholding the jury’s original finding of defamation.
Despite the substantial reduction in damages, Anas maintains that the ruling still affirms the defendants’ liability for defamation.
