Feverish campaigning went deep into the night yesterday as the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) and opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) made last-ditch efforts ahead of today’s crucial parliamentary election re-run in Ablekuma North, Greater Accra Region.

The high-stakes contest saw both candidates NPP’s Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie and NDC’s Awurabena Aubynn personally canvassing on foot across the 19 polling stations affected by the partial re-run. The door-to-door campaigns brought renewed energy and urgency to a constituency that has gone without parliamentary representation for six months.

Interestingly, until late in the re-run process, the NPP had maintained it would boycott the election, citing alleged breaches of a court order by the Electoral Commission (EC). However, Ms Afriyie defied her party’s stance, choosing instead to re-enter the race and demonstrate confidence in her ability to overturn the odds.

Last Wednesday, the NDC further ignited momentum with a “youth invasion” led by party firebrand and current CEO of the Youth Employment Agency, Malik Basintale. His motorbike-riding team energized the base, calling for a final push to secure one more parliamentary seat for the NDC.

Legal Battle and Controversy

The re-run became necessary following a dispute over the credibility of results from 19 polling stations in the December 7, 2024, election. The EC relied on scanned copies of pink sheets in the absence of original result forms, prompting challenges from the NPP and its candidate.

An application filed by the NPP seeking to halt the re-run was dismissed by a High Court last Tuesday, effectively giving the EC the green light to proceed. While the NDC welcomed the decision and urged supporters to participate fully, the NPP’s change in strategy added an unexpected twist to the evolving electoral drama.

Mixed Reactions from Voters

A visit by the Daily Graphic revealed a constituency eager for resolution and forward movement. Many voters expressed readiness to cast their ballots while emphasizing the need for peace.

“I am very ready to go and vote,” said Patience Alavanyo, a cold store operator. “A re-run is necessary since the results were unclear.”

Others, like Georgina Boateng, a provisions shop owner, called for unity and calm: “Everyone should be peaceful and calm. We’re only looking for what’s best for everyone.”

However, some residents voiced doubts over the EC’s handling of the dispute. One voter, identified only as Ruben, questioned the expansion of the issue from three disputed polling stations to 19, suggesting political interference.

Deciding the Future

The outcome of today’s re-run will finally determine who represents Ablekuma North in Parliament. For many residents, it’s not just a vote it’s a long-overdue chance to have their voices heard in the nation’s legislature.
