Alfred Ababio Kumi, a prominent member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has been charged with the publication of false information following his arrest by the National Investigations Bureau (NIB).

Kumi, who recently made headlines for petitioning former President John Dramani Mahama to dissolve the committee probing the possible removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo, is alleged to have made false claims across multiple platforms.

According to his legal counsel, Clement Opoku Gyamfi, the charges stem from three sources: a media interview, a post on his X (formerly Twitter) account, and the petition addressed to President Mahama.

“He’s been charged with false publication in relation to an interview he granted on traditional media, something he posted on his X account, and the petition he submitted to the President—those three specifically,” Gyamfi explained.

“He was cautioned and then charged, which means the process is nearing completion. Technically, the next step is likely to be court proceedings, but we have already filed a bail application,” he added.

It will be recalled that Kumi’s petition called for the immediate dismissal of the committee investigating the Chief Justice’s suspension. He argued that the presence of certain members on the panel undermined the credibility of the inquiry.

Specifically, Kumi alleged that Thaddeus Sory, legal counsel for one of the petitioners in the case, had met privately with two committee members—Justices Gabriel Pwamang and Samuel Adibu-Asiedu—thus compromising the integrity of the proceedings.
