Aliko Dangote To Open New Sugar Refinery In Ghana To Reduce Import Costs
Nigerian billionaire Aliko Dangote has unveiled an ambitious plan to establish a large-scale sugar refinery in Ghana, a move aimed at reducing the nation’s heavy dependence on sugar imports and boosting its agro-industrial sector.
In a recent LinkedIn post, Dangote introduced the project—Dangote Sugar Refinery—which will be located in Kwame-Danso in the Bono Region. He described the venture as “a new chapter” in Ghana’s economic development and a vital step toward industrial self-sufficiency.

“We’re thrilled to announce the launch of a major agro-industrial project in Kwame-Danso, Bono Region: Dangote Sugar Refinery,” Dangote wrote, signaling a strong commitment to local production and economic empowerment.
Falling under Ghana’s One District, One Factory (1D1F) initiative, the refinery is projected to slash the country’s annual sugar import bill, which currently stands at approximately $162 million.
Project Highlights:
-
Capacity to crush 12,000 tons of sugarcane daily
-
25,000 hectares of irrigated farmland
-
Production of sugar, molasses, and ethanol
Dangote confirmed that all necessary permits have been acquired and land secured, paving the way for the project’s full-scale rollout.
“With land secured and the required permits in place, we are set to proceed under the 1D1F initiative,” he said. “This venture addresses Ghana’s $162 million sugar import dependency while offering a sustainable, locally driven solution.”
Beyond the economic benefits, Dangote emphasized the refinery’s broader role in promoting industrialization and self-reliance across Africa.
“At Dangote, this is more than just a factory—it’s a driver of economic independence, job creation, and transformation for the continent. Join us in shaping Africa’s future,” he stated.
The project represents the Dangote Group’s continued expansion in West Africa and supports regional efforts to bolster food security, manufacturing, and employment. Thousands of jobs are expected to be created across agriculture, transport, and processing sectors.
