Mahama Instructs Appointees To Contribute One-Month Salary To MahamaCares Medical Fund
President John Dramani Mahama has directed all political appointees in his administration to contribute one month’s salary to the newly launched Mahama Medical Trust Fund, known as MahamaCares. The initiative is aimed at providing financial support for Ghanaians in need of urgent medical care.
The announcement was made on Monday, May 5, 2025, during the official launch of the Code of Conduct for Political Appointees at the Jubilee House.
In his address, President Mahama described the contribution as a modest but meaningful demonstration of public service and shared responsibility. “All appointees are to donate one month’s salary to the MahamaCares Trust Fund,” he stated. “This is a modest contribution to support the medical needs of our people, especially the vulnerable.”
The directive applies to all ministers, deputy ministers, presidential staffers, chief executives of state institutions, board members, Council of State members, and other individuals holding political appointments within the executive branch.
According to the President, the fund will be used to provide life-saving medical assistance to citizens who cannot afford healthcare. He added that further details regarding the fund’s administration and disbursement would be disclosed in due course. “This is not charity,” Mahama emphasized. “It is a gesture of solidarity and a reminder that we are here to serve, not enrich ourselves.”
In addition to the one-month salary donation, Mr. Mahama announced that appointees who failed to declare their assets by the March 31, 2025, deadline would face an extra penalty. These individuals are required to forfeit an additional three months’ salary to the fund—bringing their total contribution to four months.
The President clarified that all deductions would be processed through official payroll systems and properly documented.
These directives, he explained, are part of a broader effort to rebuild public trust and promote accountability and ethical leadership in governance. “We must restore the dignity of public office,” Mahama stated. “Leadership is about sacrifice, and this is just one step in that direction.”
