Alabaster Box Drags Medikal To Court Over GH₵15 Million Copyright Issue
Ghanaian gospel a cappella group Alabaster Box has filed a GH₵15 million lawsuit against rapper Medikal, accusing him of copyright infringement for allegedly sampling their hit track ‘Akwaaba’ without permission in his recent release, ‘Welcome to Africa’.
The group claims Medikal lifted the first 10 seconds of their original song and used it without authorisation. Although he has reportedly removed the portion from the YouTube version, the full track remains active on platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, Audiomack, and Boomplay.
In legal documents filed by their lawyer Richard Nunekpeku, Alabaster Box is seeking GH₵10 million in general damages and an additional GH₵5 million in exemplary damages, citing the unauthorised use of their intellectual property and the association of their brand with what they describe as profane lyrics.
The group also demands:
Complete removal of Welcome to Africa from all platforms
Halt on all promotions and performances of the song
Disclosure of revenue earned from the song
According to the group, Medikal’s failure to respond or engage shows “clear disrespect” and suggests an indirect admission of wrongdoing. The case now sets the stage for a major legal showdown between gospel purity and rap culture.
