Hon. Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye, former MP for Odododiodio, has shared a harrowing personal experience from 2020 under President Akufo-Addo’s administration, claiming he was handcuffed and forced into the trunk of a car despite being a sitting Member of Parliament.

The revelation follows public backlash over a recent police raid at the residence of Hon. Ntim Fordjour, which Minority MPs have condemned as unlawful and politically motivated. The incident at Fordjour’s Spintex residence on April 9 came after he alleged that two suspicious aircraft had landed at Kotoka International Airport with drugs and large sums of money onboard.

Speaking on Channel One TV, Vanderpuye said:
“I was handcuffed and put in the boot of a car on December 7, 2020, and dumped at the Regional Police Command. I collapsed and was unconscious for seven hours. Fifty-two of my party members were arrested, and my polling agent was shot and killed. Five years on, my boys are still in court, while the shooters walk free.”

He added that what happened to Fordjour was not unprecedented and emphasized the legal boundaries of parliamentary privilege:
“Being an MP doesn’t mean you’re above the law. Privilege applies only when Parliament is in session or the MP is on official parliamentary duty.”

Vanderpuye also questioned the Minority’s response to Fordjour’s arrest, suggesting it may have been avoidable.
“The Minority Leader had an agreement with government that MPs would be presented voluntarily when needed. So what happened yesterday was unnecessary drama.”
