Ban Betting In Ghana; It More Dangerous Than Cocaine – Blakk Rasta Urges

Ghanaian media personality Blakk Rasta has called on the government to impose a total ban on betting in the country, labeling it as more dangerous than cocaine.

Speaking on his Urban Blend show on 3FM, he expressed deep concern over the growing trend of gambling among Ghanaians, stating that betting is “very, very contagious” and “hooks you even more than crack and cocaine.”

Blakk Rasta cited research indicating that approximately 42% of Ghanaians are engaged in sports betting, questioning why citizens are more inclined to gamble than fulfill civic responsibilities like voting or paying taxes. He criticized recent efforts by the Gaming Commission to shut down betting centers near schools and churches, arguing that such measures are ineffective since betting can occur anywhere, including private homes. He asserted that the best way to combat this issue is to ban betting entirely.

Highlighting a deeper societal problem, Blakk Rasta lamented that Ghanaians are increasingly relying on chance rather than hard work and scientific methods, which he believes hampers the nation’s development. He warned that a country that depends on luck and ignores responsibility has no future.

The Gaming Commission has yet to respond directly to Blakk Rasta’s call for a ban. Past statements from the commission have emphasized balancing regulation with economic realities, noting that complete prohibition risks driving the industry underground, potentially creating larger safety issues.

This debate reflects broader concerns in Ghana about the impact of gambling on society, particularly among low-income earners who may see betting as a quick financial fix amid economic challenges. While some argue that regulated betting generates jobs and tax revenue, critics like Blakk Rasta believe the societal costs outweigh these benefits.
