More Than 600,000 Ghana Cards Remain Uncollected – National Identification Authority
The National Identification Authority (NIA) has received 700,000 blank Ghana Cards to help clear a backlog of unprinted cards from 2023.
However, a more pressing challenge remains—over 600,000 already printed Ghana Cards have been left unclaimed at various regional and district offices across the country since 2018.
In a press release dated February 18, 2025, the NIA announced that the newly acquired blank Ghana Cards will be used to clear pending records, including first-time registrations, card replacements, and updates to personal information.
To speed up the process, the Acting Executive Secretary has assembled a technical team to oversee the printing and ensure prompt distribution to district offices for issuance to applicants.
While this initiative is expected to help clear the backlog, the NIA is urging the public to collect their unclaimed Ghana Cards, many of which have remained idle for years.
The Authority has assured the public that it is working on an efficient system to distribute the unclaimed cards, though specific details of the plan have not yet been disclosed.
The Ghana Card is a vital identification and verification document, mandatory for all Ghanaians aged 15 and above. It is essential for accessing key services such as banking, healthcare, and voter registration.
