Nigeria’s hopes of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup have ended after the Super Eagles lost to DR Congo on penalties in Sunday’s intense African play-off final.

The match ended 1-1 after 120 tough minutes before DR Congo won the shootout 4-3, securing Africa’s single spot for the intercontinental play-offs in March 2025.

Nigeria started strongly, with Frank Onyeka scoring just three minutes into the game. The early lead boosted the Super Eagles, but they failed to extend it despite several good chances. DR Congo settled into the match and equalised in the 32nd minute through Mechak Elia.

A major shock came when Victor Osimhen did not return for the second half, and his absence seemed to affect Nigeria’s performance. DR Congo grew stronger, controlled possession, and pushed Nigeria deeper into their half.

Coach Eric Chelle brought on Akor Adams, Tolu Arokodare, Chidera Ejuke, and Moses Simon in search of a breakthrough, but the Congolese side remained composed and dangerous.

Nigeria survived a Congo goal overturned for a foul on goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali and pushed the match into extra time. Nwabali made another big save late on to force penalties.

In the shootout, Nwabali stopped two attempts, but Semi Ajayi’s miss in sudden death opened the door for Chancel Mbemba to score the winning kick, sending DR Congo through.

The loss ends Nigeria’s World Cup dream. The Super Eagles, who earlier defeated Gabon 4-1 to reach the final, will now turn their attention to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco as they aim to bounce back.
