Justice Baffoe-Bonnie’s vetting, held on Monday, November 10, was marred by a dramatic walkout from Minority Members of Parliament, who opposed his nomination.

The Minority cited ongoing legal proceedings challenging the removal of former Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, describing the process as unconstitutional and politically influenced.

Despite their protest, the Majority continued with the proceedings. On Thursday, November 13, Parliament approved the Appointments Committee’s report by a majority decision, confirming Justice Baffoe-Bonnie as Ghana’s next Chief Justice.

Presenting the report, First Deputy Speaker Bernard Ahiafor commended Justice Baffoe-Bonnie for his competence, integrity, and years of distinguished service on the bench, adding that he is well-qualified for the role.

The Minority rejected the voice vote and demanded a head count, which concluded with 169 votes for the Majority and 63 for the Minority.

Justice Baffoe-Bonnie, who has served on the Supreme Court since 2008, is one of the country’s longest-serving justices and has contributed to several landmark decisions. His appointment is expected to ensure continuity and stability within the judiciary as Ghana faces crucial legal and constitutional challenges.

He is expected to be sworn into office by President John Dramani Mahama at the Jubilee House in the coming days.
