Stop Hiring Outside Artistes, Give Your Own Singers a Chance – Amy Newman Urges Churches
Veteran gospel musician Amy Newman is calling on churches in Ghana to stop the increasing habit of hiring well-known gospel artistes from outside to perform at church events, saying it takes opportunities away from talented members within the church.
According to her, churches should focus on discovering, training, and uplifting the musicians God has already placed in their congregations instead of outsourcing worship.

“When we build our own people, we strengthen the ministry, empower our youth, and glorify God through the gifts He has given us,” she told Graphic Showbiz on Saturday, November 1.
Amy Newman noted that many churches ignore gifted singers in their own choirs and rather spend large sums to bring in popular artistes simply because of their fame.
“It’s not right to bring outsiders to perform when your own members are gifted enough to do the job,” she stressed.

Quoting scripture, she added, “The Bible says a prophet is not accepted in his own country, meaning people are often undervalued by those around them even though outsiders appreciate them.”
The Okamafo Jesus hitmaker said this trend discourages young musicians who genuinely want to serve in church. She believes today’s youth understand music even better and should be given room to grow and minister.

When asked if she had ever been overlooked herself, she laughed and said, “Oh, plenty of times but I don’t take it to heart.”
Amy also expressed concern about how gospel music is becoming increasingly similar to secular music. She urged gospel musicians to remain true to their calling rather than chasing trends.

“We are all gifted differently. God gives some five talents, some two, others one. If we truly understand that our gifts belong to God, we will seek His direction and not rush to copy others,” she said.
