Speaking at the Digital Africa Summit in Accra, Chief Executive Officer Stephen Blewett noted that a considerable number of subscribers still rely on 2G and 3G services.
According to him, while some customers deliberately stay on these networks to better manage their data usage, many others are limited by devices that are not compatible with 4G.
“Despite the wide availability of 4G, a large portion of our customers continue to use 3G. For some, it’s about controlling data consumption, while others are simply using handsets that do not support 4G,” Mr. Blewett explained.
He emphasized that MTN’s long-term goal is to enhance spectrum efficiency by shutting down outdated networks. However, he stressed that the process would be handled responsibly.

“We cannot just switch off 2G and 3G without ensuring that affordable 4G devices are accessible. Doing so would risk excluding many Ghanaians,” he cautioned.
