Abolish Harmful GH¢1 Fuel Levy Now – Oppong Nkrumah To Govt
The Ranking Member of Parliament’s Economic Committee, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has renewed his call for the government to scrap the controversial GH¢1 per litre fuel levy, warning that it is already contributing to rising fuel prices and confirming earlier concerns raised by the Minority.

Speaking on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News on Wednesday, July 16, Oppong Nkrumah criticized the government for pushing the levy through Parliament without proper scrutiny and ignoring warnings about its adverse effects on fuel prices and the cost of living.
“We continue to encourage the government to drop this levy,” he stated. “The reasons we gave weeks ago, when they quietly introduced it and dismissed our concerns, are now playing out.”
The GH¢1 levy, which took effect on July 16, was introduced to help stabilize the country’s struggling power sector. However, the Minority and several stakeholders in the transport and petroleum industries have condemned the policy, describing it as poorly timed and burdensome for consumers already grappling with high living costs.
Oppong Nkrumah recalled that the Energy Minister previously assured the public the levy would not lead to increased fuel prices, hailing it as a “smart and innovative” move.
“But we pointed out that the calculations were flawed. We warned that this levy could lead to an average 8% increase in fuel prices,” he explained. “Even though they delayed implementation several times, we’re now seeing the exact impact we predicted fuel prices rising in line with that 8% estimate.”
