President John Mahama has declared the environmental destruction caused by illegal mining (galamsey) a national emergency and pledged swift and decisive action to address the escalating crisis.

Speaking at a durbar during his ‘Thank You Tour’ of the Western North Region on Tuesday, July 15, the President expressed deep concern over the extent of environmental damage in areas such as Awaso, Dadieso, and Sefwi Anhwiaso.

He attributed the alarming degradation of forest reserves and water bodies in these communities to rampant illegal mining activities.

“We are deeply troubled by the environmental destruction being reported in Awaso, Dadieso, and Sefwi-Anhwiaso largely due to illegal mining. Let me be clear: this is a national emergency,” President Mahama stated. “The national taskforce will continue its operations to put an end to illegal mining activities, particularly in our forests and water bodies.”

President Mahama also condemned the conduct of rogue elements exploiting the anti-galamsey campaign for personal gain. He criticized illegal task forces reportedly extorting money from legitimate small-scale miners.

“I’m aware of certain unauthorized task forces moving around and extorting money from licensed small-scale miners,” he said. “I have instructed the relevant authorities to arrest and prosecute anyone engaged in these illegal activities.”
