Akwatia MP Ernest Kumi Dies At Age 40
Ernest Kumi, the Member of Parliament for Akwatia in Ghana’s Eastern Region, has died at the age of 40.
His passing was confirmed on Monday, July 7, 2025, by Dr. Mahama Tiah Kabiru, MP for Walewale, in a statement to a 3news parliamentary correspondent.

A rising star in the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kumi secured the Akwatia seat in the 2024 general elections with 19,269 votes, defeating the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Henry Yiadom Boakye, who garnered 17,206 votes. He had earlier unseated then-incumbent Ama Sey during the party’s 2023 primaries.

Kumi’s time in Parliament was not without controversy. In February 2025, the Koforidua High Court convicted him of contempt for defying an injunction that barred his swearing-in. However, the Supreme Court overturned the ruling in June 2025, citing judicial bias and reinstating his status as MP.

In Parliament, he served on the Lands and Natural Resources Committee and the House Committee.
The cause of his death has not yet been made public.
