The Electoral Commission of Ghana has announced that a rerun of the parliamentary elections in the Ablekuma North constituency will take place on Friday, July 11, 2025, in 19 polling stations. This follows a months-long impasse stemming from the 2024 general elections, which left the constituency without parliamentary representation.

In an official statement issued on Wednesday, July 2, the EC explained that the decision was made after discovering that results from 19 out of 37 polling stations used during collation had not been verified by their respective Presiding Officers, rendering the outcome inconclusive.

“After extensive deliberations, the Commission informed the Political Parties that it would proceed to rerun the election in 19 out of the 37 Polling Stations,” the EC’s statement read.

While there were earlier calls to rerun elections in all 37 polling stations, the Commission later confirmed that verification had been secured for 18 of them, making reruns in those stations unnecessary.

“The Commission was able to secure the Presiding Officers’ verification and confirmation for 18 scanned polling station results Agents of both parties also approved these results. Therefore, no rerun will be held in those polling stations,” the EC clarified.

The Commission has also requested police protection to ensure a peaceful and transparent rerun, especially given that previous attempts at re-collation and declaration were marred by violence.

The Ablekuma North parliamentary seat remains hotly contested between Ewurabena Aubynn of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and Nana Akua Afriyie of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The upcoming rerun is expected to be a decisive moment for both candidates and for restoring representation to the constituents of Ablekuma North.
