Speaking on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News, Dr. Asiedu-Bekoe cautioned the public against assuming the virus has disappeared, stressing that COVID-19 has continued to exist in Ghana since the outbreak began in 2020. “COVID never left. COVID has been with us since 2020,” he said.

“Last year, the Director-General of the WHO announced that COVID was no longer considered a global emergency, but that did not mean the virus was gone. If it were, the WHO would have declared an official end to the pandemic.”

The health official made the comments in response to a recent uptick in cases following a hall week celebration at a local university, where close contact likely contributed to a cluster of new infections. “What happened was that during a hall week celebration, a student who had the virus likely caused its spread in the cluster. But I want to emphasize that this is not the first time we’ve seen cases recently. COVID never left,” he reiterated.

Dr. Asiedu-Bekoe urged the public to remain cautious and adhere to safety protocols, especially in large gatherings, to prevent further transmission. “What we need to do now is revisit the safety measures and protocols we used to contain the virus in the past,” he advised.

The Ghana Health Service is expected to continue monitoring the situation and may roll out additional guidelines if necessary to manage the resurgence of cases.
