The Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Hon. Abla Dzifa Gomashie, has paid a courtesy visit to legendary Ghanaian highlife musician Agya Koo Nimo at his residence in Kumasi.

The visit forms part of President John Dramani Mahama’s broader initiative to ensure the welfare and dignity of Ghana’s elderly citizens, especially those who have made outstanding contributions to the nation’s cultural and creative legacy.

During the visit, Hon. Gomashie praised Agya Koo Nimo’s instrumental role in shaping Ghana’s musical identity and reaffirmed the government’s dedication to supporting aging creatives. “This is not just a symbolic visit it is a statement of care, recognition, and responsibility,” she stated.

President Mahama had previously, during the launch of the Black Star Experience in May, tasked the Tourism Minister with organising a ceremony to honour the highlife icon. In that call to action, the President underscored the importance of celebrating cultural trailblazers like Agya Koo Nimo as a way to acknowledge their lasting impact.

Referencing the President’s directive, Hon. Gomashie emphasized that it has been the guiding principle for her and her team in prioritising the honouring of living legends. “We do not know the hour of our birth, nor the moment we depart this life,” she said. “While we are still planning a formal celebration to honour the pioneers and elders of our sector those on whose shoulders we stand it felt only right to come here today.”

Describing Agya Koo Nimo as a “chief in the realm of Ghanaian culture,” the Minister presented him with a hamper and a token envelope to support the musicians who performed in his honour.

In a heartfelt response, Agya Koo Nimo expressed his sincere appreciation to President Mahama and the Ministry for the gesture. “This is not just for me it is for all musicians,” he remarked, urging the government to establish a national museum dedicated to the creative arts. Such an institution, he said, would help preserve the works of Ghana’s artistic pioneers and serve as a valuable resource for future generations.

He further suggested that Ghanaian music be played at tourist attractions across the country to enrich the visitor experience and promote local culture.
